The ESAB OK Tigrod 309L is a high-quality, chromium-nickel stainless steel rod designed specifically for Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) applications. Classified as an ER309L filler metal, it features a low carbon content (maximum 0.03%) which significantly reduces the risk of carbide precipitation, thereby enhancing resistance to intergranular corrosion. This specific formulation is the industry standard for welding Type 309 stainless steels, as well as for joining 300-series stainless steels to carbon or low-alloy steels.
One of the critical technical advantages of the OK Tigrod 309L is its higher alloy content of Chromium (~24%) and Nickel (~13%) compared to standard 308L rods. This enriched chemistry allows the weld metal to tolerate dilution from mild steel substrates without compromising corrosion resistance or mechanical integrity. Consequently, it is the preferred choice for depositing buffer layers in cladding applications before applying a final layer of 308L. The 2.5mm diameter provides excellent control for root passes and fill passes on medium-thickness materials, ensuring sound metallurgical bonding in complex fabrication scenarios.
