OVERVIEW

Technical Overview of Selectarc E316L-16

The Selectarc E316L-16 is a high-performance rutile-basic coated manual metal arc welding electrode designed for the joining of austenitic stainless steels of the 18% Cr / 12% Ni / 2-3% Mo type. This electrode is manufactured to meet the stringent requirements of the AWS A5.4 E316L-16 classification, ensuring consistent metallurgical properties and mechanical integrity. The 'L' designation indicates an extra-low carbon content (maximum 0.04%), which is critical for preventing carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries during the welding thermal cycle. This feature significantly mitigates the risk of intergranular corrosion, making the electrode suitable for applications where the weldment will not undergo post-weld heat treatment.

The inclusion of Molybdenum (Mo) in the alloy matrix provides enhanced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-bearing environments and reducing acids. This makes the Selectarc E316L-16 an optimal choice for fabricating equipment used in aggressive chemical processing, marine environments, and pulp and paper manufacturing. The electrode produces a weld deposit with a ferrite number (FN) controlled to prevent hot cracking while maintaining excellent cryogenic toughness and high-temperature creep strength up to 400°C.

From a usability standpoint, the rutile-based flux formulation ensures a stable arc with fine metal transfer, minimizing spatter and maximizing deposition efficiency. The slag system is designed to be self-detaching or easily removable, leaving a smooth, clean weld bead with fine ripples that requires minimal post-weld grinding. This electrode operates effectively on both Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP), providing flexibility for various power source configurations found in industrial maintenance and fabrication shops.

The 3.2mm diameter is versatile for medium-thickness plate welding, offering a balance between deposition rate and heat input control. It is packaged in a durable 5kg plastic tube that protects the hygroscopic coating from moisture absorption, ensuring the electrodes remain in prime condition for critical welding tasks. Proper storage and handling are recommended to maintain the low-hydrogen characteristics of the coating.
