Monel is utilized in this application due to its outstanding resistance to corrosion by many agents, including rapidly flowing seawater, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, and alkalies. While welding environments may not always present these specific extremes, the alloy's stability ensures that the filter itself does not oxidize or degrade over time, which could introduce contaminants into the gas or coolant stream it is meant to protect.

This filter is typically situated at the inlet of gas solenoid valves or within coolant flow paths in Miller power sources. Its function is to mechanically separate particulate matter—such as dust, metal shavings, or debris from gas cylinders and hoses—from the fluid stream.
