The Lincoln Electric Start or Crater Module (K334) is an essential accessory designed to expand the functionality of the Lincoln NA-5 automatic welding control system. In high-precision automated welding environments, the parameters required to initiate an arc or terminate a weld often differ significantly from the steady-state welding parameters. This module bridges that gap, offering operators the ability to fine-tune Wire Feed Speed (WFS) and Voltage for a specific, adjustable duration.

Versatile Configuration

The K334 is engineered with versatility in mind. It functions as a dual-purpose unit, capable of serving as either a Start Module or a Crater Module depending on how it is integrated into the system.

• As a Start Module: It allows for a "hot start" or specific run-in settings, ensuring immediate arc establishment and proper fusion at the very beginning of the joint, minimizing cold lap defects.
• As a Crater Module: It ramps the welding parameters down at the end of the cycle to fill the weld crater, preventing the formation of shrinkage cracks which are common failure points in heavy structural welds.

It is important to note that a single K334 unit performs only one of these functions at a time. For applications requiring both specialized starting and crater filling procedures, two separate assemblies must be installed.

Technical Specifications

The module features an adjustable timer that permits the selected WFS and Voltage settings to be active for a period of up to 10 seconds. This time window is sufficient for most standard automated procedures, including Submerged Arc (SAW) and heavy-duty MIG/MAG applications. The unit is compact, weighing approximately 2 lbs, and is designed to mount seamlessly with the NA-5 control architecture. By isolating the start and stop phases, the K334 ensures that the main weld schedule remains optimized for the bulk of the joint, while the transient phases are handled with precision.
