The Selectarc E309L-16 is a high-performance rutile-basic coated stick electrode designed for the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process. Engineered to meet the rigorous AWS A5.4 E309L-16 classification, this consumable is essential for industrial applications requiring the joining of dissimilar metals, specifically stainless steel to carbon or low-alloy steels. The 3.2mm diameter is versatile for medium-to-heavy fabrication tasks, providing excellent deposition rates while maintaining control over the weld pool.

Metallurgically, the E309L-16 composition features a high chromium (approx. 23%) and nickel (approx. 12%) content, which ensures a ferritic-austenitic microstructure. This specific chemistry provides exceptional resistance to hot cracking, a common issue when welding restrained joints or dissimilar materials. The 'L' designation indicates a low carbon content (maximum 0.04%), which significantly reduces the risk of carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries, thereby preserving the corrosion resistance of the weld zone even after exposure to elevated temperatures. This makes it an excellent choice for buffer layers in cladding applications where a transition from mild steel to a hardfacing or corrosion-resistant layer is required.

Operational characteristics of the Selectarc E309L-16 are optimized for welder comfort and efficiency. The rutile-based coating facilitates a smooth, stable arc with very low spatter generation, operating effectively on both AC and DC+ currents. Slag removal is often self-releasing, leaving a clean, finely rippled bead profile that requires minimal post-weld grinding.
