The Smith 15001-40 Fixed Flow Surge Protector is an essential accessory for professional MIG welding operations looking to reduce overhead costs and improve weld quality. In typical MIG setups, pressure builds up in the gas hose between the regulator and the solenoid when the trigger is released. When the trigger is pulled again, this accumulated pressure releases as a high-velocity gas surge. This surge not only wastes expensive shielding gas but can also create turbulence at the weld pool, pulling in atmospheric air and causing porosity at the start of the weld.
The Smith 15001-40 solves this problem by restricting the flow to a constant rate. Designed with a precision .037-inch orifice, it delivers a steady 40 SCFH (Standard Cubic Feet per Hour) when supplied with 30 PSIG of inlet pressure. By preventing the initial blast of gas, it ensures a smooth, laminar flow from the moment the arc is struck. This device is particularly effective in production environments involving frequent tack welding or short stitch welds, where the cumulative waste from start-up surges is significant.
Installation is straightforward and requires no modification to your existing equipment. The unit features standard 5/8"-18 UNF connections (one male, one female), allowing it to screw directly into the gas inlet of your wire feeder or welder. Your shielding gas hose then connects to the back of the surge protector. It is compatible with all standard shielding gases, including pure Argon, Carbon Dioxide (CO2), and Argon/CO2 mixes. Note that this device must be used in conjunction with a cylinder gas regulator or flowmeter capable of supplying the necessary inlet pressure.
