In a standard MIG setup, when the gas solenoid valve closes at the end of a weld cycle, the pressure within the delivery hose—located between the regulator/flowmeter and the wire feeder—continues to rise until it equalizes with the regulator's static pressure setting. Upon the next trigger actuation, this stored volume of high-pressure gas is released instantaneously, resulting in a flow surge that far exceeds the optimal shielding gas rate.

This surge protector functions as a fixed-orifice flow restrictor, utilizing a calibrated .026-inch aperture to govern gas velocity. It is specifically engineered to deliver a constant flow rate of 20 Standard Cubic Feet per Hour (SCFH) when the upstream pressure is maintained at 30 PSIG. By placing the restriction point immediately at the inlet of the wire feeder or power source, the device effectively decouples the hose capacitance from the arc start, ensuring that gas delivery ramps up smoothly to the design flow rate rather than spiking.

The unit is constructed with standard 5/8"-18 UNF threads, featuring a female inlet and a male outlet.
