The Smith Equipment 35-30-320 is a specialized flowmeter regulator engineered to address the thermodynamic challenges associated with high-flow Carbon Dioxide (CO2) regulation. Unlike standard inert gas regulators, this unit incorporates a passive thermal management system designed to counteract the Joule-Thomson effect, where rapid gas expansion causes significant temperature drops leading to regulator freeze-up. The 35-30-320 utilizes an external coiled copper tube heat exchanger that facilitates thermal transfer from the ambient environment to the gas stream, effectively warming the CO2 before it enters the final regulation stage. This design allows for continuous high-flow operation without the reliance on electric line heaters.

Mechanically, the regulator features a true two-stage reduction architecture. The first stage reduces full cylinder pressure (up to 3000 PSIG) to an intermediate pressure, while the second stage maintains a precise delivery pressure of 30 PSIG. This configuration virtually eliminates the "supply pressure effect" (or delivery pressure rise) common in single-stage regulators as the cylinder contents are depleted. The result is a stable, non-fluctuating flow rate from a full cylinder down to the empty point, critical for maintaining consistent weld porosity standards.

Internal durability is secured through Smith's proprietary Sure-Seat technology. The high-pressure seat assembly is encapsulated by a 15-micron nickel-plated bronze filter. This filtration barrier prevents metal shavings, scale, and other particulate contamination from reaching the seating surface, which is the leading cause of regulator creep and failure. The flowmeter component utilizes a shatter-resistant polycarbonate tube with a 0-60 SCFH scale. It employs a unique self-centering ball guide system that uses aerodynamic centering to ensure the float remains vertical within the gas stream, providing accurate readings even if the cylinder and regulator are tilted up to several degrees off-axis.
