OVERVIEW

Technical Specification and Chemical Composition

The Miller 043810 Low-Conductivity Antifreeze/Coolant is an industrial-grade heat transfer fluid engineered specifically for the demands of heavy-duty welding applications. The solution is a pre-mixed, ready-to-use formulation consisting of 50% ethylene glycol and 50% deionized water. The use of deionized water is critical in this application, as it eliminates mineral ions such as calcium and magnesium that are present in tap water. These minerals can precipitate out of solution under high heat, causing scale buildup in torch heads and pump impellers, which restricts flow and reduces cooling efficiency over time.

Thermodynamically, this coolant significantly expands the operating range of water-cooled systems. It depresses the freezing point to -37°F (-38°C), ensuring that equipment stored in unheated environments or service trucks remains protected against catastrophic freeze damage. Conversely, it elevates the boiling point to 227°F (108°C), providing a higher thermal overhead for high-amperage TIG or MIG welding where coolant temperatures can spike. This prevents phase change (boiling) within the torch head, which can lead to vapor lock and immediate torch failure.

A defining characteristic of this product is its low electrical conductivity. In Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG), High Frequency (HF) is often used to initiate the arc. Standard automotive coolants or tap water contain conductive ions that can attract this HF current, leading to arc wandering, hard starting, or even electrolysis that corrodes internal components. Miller 043810 is formulated to be dielectric, ensuring that the welding current remains at the arc and does not leak through the cooling system. Additionally, the fluid contains a proprietary algae inhibitor to prevent biological growth that can clog narrow coolant passages. Note: This product is not compatible with systems containing aluminum in the coolant path or push-pull systems.
