When stainless steel is welded, the intense heat causes the formation of a chromium-depleted layer and heavy oxide scales, commonly known as heat tint. This discoloration is not merely cosmetic; it represents a compromised surface where the material’s natural corrosion resistance has been lost. To restore the stainless steel to its original specifications, this aggressive pickling paste chemically removes the damaged layer, allowing the passive oxide film to reform.

Formulated for efficiency and ease of use, the 71E Plus paste features a thixotropic consistency. This means it applies smoothly but stays in place, making it suitable for vertical and overhead applications where liquid cleaners would run off. The 2kg jar provides a substantial quantity of material, making it cost-effective for workshops handling consistent stainless steel projects. It is particularly effective on standard grades such as 304 and 316 stainless steel, aggressively attacking the weld oxides without damaging the parent metal when used as directed.

Application and Safety

Using pickling paste requires strict adherence to safety protocols due to the presence of strong acids (typically hydrofluoric and nitric acids). Operators must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including acid-resistant gloves, face shields, and protective clothing. The paste is applied to the weld area using an acid-resistant brush, left to dwell for a specific period (usually 30 to 60 minutes depending on temperature and steel grade), and then thoroughly rinsed off with high-pressure water. Neutralization prior to disposal is highly recommended to meet environmental standards.

Key Industrial Benefits

Restoration: Fully restores the corrosion-resistant properties of the stainless steel surface.

Efficiency: Fast-acting formula reduces downtime between welding and finishing.

Versatility: Adheres to complex geometries and vertical seams without dripping.

Finish: Leaves a clean, matte grey finish that blends well with the surrounding metal.

Use for removing tarnish created by welding on high alloyed steels.

More like a liquid than a paste, it can easily be applied using an acid resistant brush.
[2021,2028

post-1783972","product","type-product","status-publish","product_cat-chemicals","product_cat-pickling-paste","pa_application-stainless-steel","pa_application-weld-cleaning","pa_brand-vanguard","pa_item-pickling-paste","pa_packaging-description-2-kg-jar","pa_packaging-description-2kg-jar","pa_product-cleaner","first","instock","taxable","shipping-taxable","purchasable","product-type-simple

71E Plus Stainless Steel Pickling Paste - 2kg Jar - Josef Gas

<meta name="description" content="Restore stainless steel corrosion resistance with Vanguard 71E Plus Pickling Paste. 2kg jar for removing weld oxides and heat tint.
