The Pferd 61788 Silicon Carbide Bench Grinding Wheel is a premium abrasive tool engineered for specific industrial applications where standard aluminum oxide wheels fall short. Measuring 6 inches in diameter with a 1-inch face width, this wheel is constructed using high-quality silicon carbide grain bonded in a vitrified matrix. Silicon carbide is significantly harder and sharper than aluminum oxide, making it the abrasive of choice for working with extremely hard materials such as tungsten carbide, as well as low-tensile strength materials like cast iron, aluminum, copper, and bronze.

One of the primary challenges in bench grinding is selecting the right abrasive for the workpiece to prevent wheel loading or inefficient cutting. This 60-grit wheel offers a medium-coarse texture that excels at general-purpose sharpening and stock removal on compatible materials. The vitrified bond system provides a rigid structure that holds the abrasive grains firmly in place, ensuring the wheel maintains its geometry over time—a critical factor when precision sharpening carbide-tipped tools or drill bits. The porous nature of the vitrified bond also promotes cooler cutting action, reducing the risk of thermal damage to sensitive workpieces.

Industrial maintenance professionals and machinists rely on Pferd’s consistency and quality. The 61788 wheel is designed to fit a wide range of bench and pedestal grinders, typically supplied with telescoping bushings to accommodate arbor sizes ranging from 1/2 inch to 1 inch. Whether you are reconditioning carbide lathe tooling, deburring an aluminum casting, or grinding grey iron components, this silicon carbide wheel delivers the aggressive cut and durability required for demanding shop environments. It is an essential addition to any workshop that processes non-ferrous metals or maintains carbide tooling.

Pferd Silicon Carbide vitrified bench wheels.
