The Miller 246555 Kit is a critical repair assembly designed specifically for the Millermatic 252 welding power source. This component serves as the main power transformer (XFMR), responsible for stepping down high-voltage utility input (200V or 230V single-phase) to the lower voltage, high-amperage current required for the MIG welding process. In transformer-rectifier based welding machines like the Millermatic 252, the main transformer is the heart of the power topology, directly influencing the duty cycle, arc stability, and overall output characteristics of the machine.

Failure of the main transformer can manifest as a complete loss of welding output, loud humming or buzzing noises indicating loose laminations or shorted turns, or the immediate tripping of input circuit breakers upon activation. This kit is engineered to replace a compromised unit with an OEM specification component, ensuring that the magnetic flux properties and winding ratios match the original design requirements of the Millermatic 252 control circuitry. Using non-OEM transformers can lead to calibration errors, erratic wire feed speeds due to voltage fluctuations, and potential damage to the rectifier assembly.

The 246555 kit is specifically wound for 200/230V input configurations. It features high-thermal-index insulation on the copper windings to withstand the heat generated during high-amperage welding at the machine’s rated duty cycle. The core is constructed from high-grade silicon steel laminations to minimize eddy current losses and improve electrical efficiency. When installing this component, technicians should verify the input voltage jumpers are correctly set for the available shop power to prevent immediate damage to the new transformer.
