OVERVIEW

Technical Overview: ER100S-1 High Strength TIG Rod

The Exocor ER100S-1 is a premium low-alloy steel TIG welding rod engineered for joining high-strength materials where weld integrity and mechanical performance are paramount. This consumable is classified under AWS A5.28 and is specifically formulated with a precise balance of Manganese, Nickel, and Molybdenum. This alloying approach enhances the metallurgical structure of the weld deposit, allowing it to achieve yield strengths in excess of 690 MPa (100 ksi) while maintaining excellent ductility and impact toughness.

Designed primarily for the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) process, this 2.5mm diameter rod is the industry standard for fabricating components from quenched and tempered steels such as HY-80 and HSLA-80. These base materials are frequently utilized in military, marine, and heavy structural applications requiring superior strength-to-weight ratios. The ER100S-1 ensures that the weld metal matches or exceeds the mechanical properties of these base plates, preventing the weld zone from becoming the weak link in the assembly.

Metallurgically, the inclusion of approximately 1.25-2.00% Nickel and 0.25-0.50% Molybdenum promotes a fine-grained microstructure that resists cold cracking and provides reliable impact values at sub-zero temperatures. This makes the rod suitable for pressure vessel construction and critical piping systems subject to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code requirements (Section III), provided proper qualification procedures are followed.

The rod features a clean, high-quality surface finish to minimize contamination and ensure consistent electrical conductivity during welding. It is recommended for use with 100% Argon shielding gas to maintain arc stability and prevent oxidation of the reactive alloying elements. Proper storage in a dry environment is essential to prevent hydrogen pickup.

FAQ

For TIG welding (GTAW) with ER100S-1, 100% Argon is the standard shielding gas. It provides excellent arc stability and protects the weld pool from atmospheric contamination.

The ER100S-1 classification indicates a minimum tensile strength of 100,000 psi (approx. 690 MPa) in the as-welded condition.

While you can physically weld mild steel with it, it is over-alloyed for standard A36 steel and is much more expensive. It is best reserved for high-strength low-alloy steels like HY-80.

Preheat requirements depend on the base material thickness and grade (e.g., HY-80). Generally, high-strength steels require specific preheat and interpass temperature controls to prevent cracking.

The 'S' stands for solid wire/rod, and the '-1' designates the specific chemical composition requirements (Ni-Mo-Mn alloy) under AWS A5.28.

ER100S-1 TIG rods are designed for use with DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative) polarity.

This specific product is 2.5mm in diameter, which is approximately equivalent to 3/32 inch.
