The UTP A 73 G 2 is a premium copper-coated gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW/TIG) rod designed specifically for joining high-strength low-alloy steels, particularly those classified as weathering steels (such as Corten A and B). This 1/16" (1.6mm) diameter rod is formulated with a precise blend of Manganese, Nickel, and Copper (Mn-Ni-Cu) to produce a weld deposit that exhibits superior resistance to atmospheric corrosion compared to standard mild steel filler metals.
One of the critical technical advantages of the UTP A 73 G 2 is its ability to color-match the base material. When weathering steels are exposed to the elements, they develop a protective patina (rust layer) that inhibits further corrosion. Standard welding rods do not rust at the same rate or color, leading to visible weld lines. This UTP rod ensures that the weld seam weathers identically to the base plate, maintaining the aesthetic integrity of architectural structures, bridges, and outdoor sculptures.
Mechanically, the rod offers excellent toughness down to -40°C and high tensile strength, making it suitable for structural engineering applications where safety and durability are paramount. It flows smoothly under 100% Argon shielding gas, providing a stable arc and clean, defect-free welds. It is classified under AWS A5.28 as ER80S-G and EN ISO 16834-A as W Mn3Ni1Cu.
