The Hobart Tube-Alloy 218-O is a specialized flux-cored welding wire designed specifically for the maintenance and repair of austenitic manganese steel components. Engineered for open arc (self-shielded) operation, this wire eliminates the need for external shielding gas, simplifying field repairs and setup. The 7/64-inch diameter allows for high deposition rates, making it highly efficient for large-scale build-up applications found in mining, dredging, and heavy construction industries.
Metallurgically, the Tube-Alloy 218-O deposits an austenitic manganese steel alloy that is exceptionally tough. Its primary characteristic is its ability to work-harden rapidly. While the as-welded deposit is relatively soft and ductile—preventing cracking during the cooling phase—it hardens significantly when subjected to heavy impact in service. This transformation creates a wear-resistant surface capable of withstanding severe pounding without spalling, while the underlying material remains tough enough to absorb shock.
This wire is strictly recommended for joining austenitic manganese steels to themselves or for building up worn manganese steel parts. It is not intended for joining manganese steel to carbon steel or for general hardfacing on mild steel substrates without appropriate buffer layers or metallurgical consideration. The wire operates on Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP) and supports both single and multiple pass welding procedures, providing versatility in restoring dimensionally compromised parts.
