OVERVIEW

Technical Overview of Central Wire ER309L TIG Rod

The Central Wire ER309L Stainless Steel TIG Rod is a high-alloy consumable designed to meet AWS A5.9 specifications. This 1.6mm (1/16") filler metal features a nominal composition of 24% Chromium and 13% Nickel, providing superior heat and corrosion resistance compared to standard 308L grades. The 'L' designation indicates a low carbon content (maximum 0.03%), which is critical for minimizing carbide precipitation during the welding process and preventing intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone (HAZ).

ER309L is metallurgically engineered for welding dissimilar metals. It is the industry standard for joining austenitic stainless steels (such as 304 or 309) to carbon or low-alloy steels. The higher alloy content compensates for dilution from the mild steel base metal, ensuring the resulting weld deposit remains austenitic and ductile. It is also frequently used for applying buffer layers on carbon steel prior to cladding with 308L or other stainless grades. The rod exhibits excellent general corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.

This product is supplied in a 10lb tube with standard 36-inch lengths. Each rod is typically stamped or flagged for identification, ensuring quality control compliance in industrial environments. Mechanical properties of the undiluted weld metal typically include a tensile strength of approximately 85,000 PSI and elongation of roughly 35-40%, depending on welding parameters and shielding gas purity.
