OVERVIEW

Premium Stainless Steel Stick Electrode for Industrial Fabrication

The Selectarc E308L-16 is a high-performance rutile-basic coated stick electrode designed specifically for the welding of austenitic stainless steels, including types 301, 302, 304, and 304L. Engineered to meet AWS A5.4 standards, this consumable delivers a deposit with low carbon content (maximum 0.04%), which is critical for preventing intergranular corrosion and ensuring the longevity of welded structures in harsh environments. The 2.5mm diameter is versatile, suitable for joining thin-to-medium gauge sheets and pipework often found in the chemical, food processing, and architectural sectors.

Technically, the E308L-16 coating formulation provides a stable, soft arc that operates effectively on both AC and DC+ currents. The slag system is designed to be self-releasing in many joint configurations, leaving a finely rippled, bright bead that requires minimal post-weld grinding or polishing. This electrode exhibits excellent wetting characteristics, ensuring sound fusion and reducing the risk of defects such as lack of fusion or undercut. Mechanical properties of the weld metal typically exceed 520 MPa in tensile strength with elongation greater than 35%, providing a ductile and robust joint.

Packaged in a durable 5 kg tube, these electrodes are protected from moisture and physical damage during storage and transport. The Selectarc E308L-16 is an essential consumable for MRO operations, fabrication shops, and maintenance teams requiring reliable, high-quality stainless steel welding solutions. It is particularly effective for applications where aesthetic finish and corrosion resistance are paramount.

FAQ

It is primarily designed for welding austenitic stainless steels such as AISI 301, 302, 304, and 304L. It can also be used for 308 and 321 grades stabilized with titanium or niobium.

The E308L-16 runs well on both Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP/DC+) and Alternating Current (AC). DC+ is generally preferred for smoother arc control.

If the electrodes have been stored properly in a dry environment, re-drying is often not necessary. However, if they have absorbed moisture, re-dry at 300°C-350°C for 2 hours to prevent porosity.

The 'L' stands for Low Carbon. This reduces the risk of carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries during welding, which prevents intergranular corrosion and ensures the weld remains rust-resistant.

No, E308L-16 electrodes are generally not suitable for vertical down welding due to the fluidity of the slag. Vertical up is the recommended technique for vertical joints.

Selectarc E308L-16 is known for excellent slag detachability. In many cases, the slag is self-releasing, leaving a clean bead that requires minimal brushing.

For a 2.5mm E308L-16 electrode, a current range of approximately 50 to 80 Amps is typically recommended, depending on the material thickness and welding position.

While it will physically weld mild steel to stainless (dissimilar welding), an E309L electrode is the correct choice for that application to prevent cracking. E308L is best for stainless-to-stainless.
