Technical Overview of ER316LSi Stainless Steel MIG Wire


The CWM316LSI035 is a premium quality ER316LSi stainless steel solid welding wire designed for the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) process. This wire is produced to meet the rigorous standards of AWS A5.9 and ASME SFA 5.9 classifications. The 'LSi' designation indicates a modification to the standard 316L chemistry: it features a low carbon content (maximum 0.03%) combined with a higher silicon content (typically 0.65% to 1.00%). The low carbon nature of the alloy is critical for preventing carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries during the welding process, thereby maintaining resistance to intergranular corrosion without the need for post-weld heat treatment.



The elevated silicon content is the distinguishing feature of this consumable. Silicon acts as a deoxidizer and significantly improves the fluidity and wetting characteristics of the molten weld pool. This results in a smoother bead appearance, better tie-in at the weld toes, and increased travel speeds compared to standard ER316L wire. The alloy composition includes approximately 18-20% Chromium, 11-14% Nickel, and 2-3% Molybdenum. The addition of Molybdenum provides enhanced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-containing environments such as marine atmospheres or chemical processing plants.



This 0.035-inch (0.9mm) diameter wire is precision layer wound on a 33lb (15kg) spool, ensuring consistent feedability and electrical contact in automated or semi-automatic welding operations. It is suitable for joining type 316 and 316L stainless steels, as well as 304 and 304L grades where superior corrosion resistance is required. Common shielding gases include Argon/CO2 blends (typically 98/2 or 90/10) or Argon/Oxygen mixtures for spray arc transfer, as well as Helium-based tri-mixes for short-circuit transfer modes.
