The Hobart Sterling AP 308/308L is a high-performance stick electrode designed for the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) of austenitic stainless steels. This 3/16-inch diameter electrode comes in a convenient 7-pound can, ensuring you have ample material for heavy-duty fabrication tasks. Engineered to meet AWS E308/308L-16 classifications, it is specifically formulated to weld Type 304 and 304L base metals, as well as other 18 Cr-8 Ni steels.

One of the critical features of the Sterling AP series is its "All Position" (AP) capability. Unlike some stainless rods that struggle out of position, this electrode maintains a smooth, controllable arc in vertical and overhead orientations, as well as flat and horizontal. The coating is designed to produce a flat to slightly convex bead profile with fine ripples, minimizing the need for post-weld grinding. The slag system is particularly user-friendly, often self-detaching or requiring only a light tap to remove, which significantly improves productivity in multi-pass applications.

Metallurgically, the "L" designation indicates a low carbon content (maximum 0.04%), which is crucial for preventing intergranular corrosion and carbide precipitation during the welding process and in service. This makes the Hobart Sterling AP an excellent choice for industries requiring high corrosion resistance, such as petrochemical processing and food manufacturing. It operates effectively on both Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP) and Alternating Current (AC), providing flexibility depending on your power source availability.
