OVERVIEW

High-Performance ER5356 Aluminum Alloy Filler Metal

The ER5356 Aluminum MIG Wire is a premium general-purpose welding alloy designed for high-strength structural applications. Classified as an AlMg5 alloy, it contains approximately 5% magnesium, which serves as the primary alloying element. This composition provides the wire with significantly higher tensile strength (typically around 39,000 psi or 269 MPa) compared to the common ER4043 silicon-based alloys. It is the preferred choice for welding 5000-series aluminum base metals, including 5050, 5052, 5083, 5154, 5356, 5454, and 5456.

One of the critical technical advantages of ER5356 is its column strength. The magnesium content makes the wire stiffer than 4043, which enhances feedability through MIG torch liners and reduces the likelihood of birdnesting, particularly in push-pull systems or standard guns equipped with Teflon liners. This wire exhibits excellent corrosion resistance, making it the industry standard for marine applications and environments exposed to salt water.

In terms of post-weld finishing, ER5356 is superior for applications requiring anodizing. Unlike 4043, which tends to turn a dark gray or black color after the anodizing process, 5356 maintains a bright, white color that closely matches the base metal. However, it is important to note that this alloy is not recommended for applications where service temperatures will consistently exceed 150°F (65°C), as it may become susceptible to stress corrosion cracking over time. For general fabrication requiring high shear strength and ductility, ER5356 is the optimal specification.
