Technical Overview of Weldcraft 2% Lanthanated Tungsten

The Weldcraft WL2532X7 is a premium 2% Lanthanated tungsten electrode designed to meet the rigorous demands of modern TIG welding applications. Classified as EWLa-2 (or WL20 under ISO standards), this electrode is composed of approximately 97.3% tungsten and 1.8% to 2.2% lanthanum oxide (La2O3). The addition of lanthanum oxide significantly lowers the work function of the tungsten, facilitating easier electron emission compared to pure tungsten. This results in superior arc starting characteristics, improved arc stability, and a wider operating amperage range.

One of the primary technical advantages of the WL2532X7 is its ability to function effectively in both Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC) polarities. Unlike pure tungsten, which is limited to AC, or thoriated tungsten, which is primarily for DC, 2% Lanthanated electrodes offer a universal solution. In AC applications, such as aluminum welding, the electrode maintains a stable balled end without excessive spitting or erosion. In DC applications, commonly used for stainless and carbon steels, it holds a sharp point for extended periods, providing deep penetration and precise heat control.

Furthermore, this electrode serves as a direct, non-radioactive substitute for 2% Thoriated (Red) tungsten. Thoriated tungsten contains thorium dioxide, a low-level radioactive material that poses potential health risks during grinding and disposal. The 2% Lanthanated composition matches the conductivity and current-carrying capacity of thoriated tungsten, allowing welders to transition to a safer consumable without sacrificing performance. The 5/32-inch (4.0 mm) diameter is specifically suited for higher amperage applications, capable of handling significant heat input while minimizing tip erosion and tungsten inclusion in the weld pool.

The electrodes are ground to a precision finish and cut to a standard 7-inch length, ensuring compatibility with standard TIG torch collets and collet bodies. The consistent oxide distribution throughout the matrix of the electrode ensures uniform performance from the first arc strike to the final stub.
