The Thermal Dynamics 7-3580 Extra Cool Torch Coolant is a specialized heat transfer fluid engineered specifically for the rigorous demands of plasma cutting and TIG welding cooling systems. Unlike standard automotive coolants or plain water, this formulation is built upon a base of de-ionized water. The de-ionization process removes dissolved mineral ions that can cause scale buildup within the fine passages of torch heads and heat exchangers. This is critical for maintaining consistent flow rates and heat dissipation efficiency over the lifespan of the equipment.
A primary technical requirement for plasma arc cooling fluids is dielectric strength. The Extra Cool mixture maintains a resistance value of 0.4 mega ohm/cm or greater. This high resistivity is essential to prevent the coolant from acting as a conductive path for the high-frequency / high-voltage current used to initiate and maintain the plasma arc. Low-resistance fluids can lead to internal arcing within the torch, rapid electrode erosion, and catastrophic failure of the torch head. The 70/30 mixture ratio provides a balanced thermal capacity while offering freeze protection down to +10 degrees Fahrenheit (-12 degrees Celsius), making it suitable for industrial environments where temperature control may fluctuate.
Furthermore, the chemistry of the 7-3580 coolant is designed to be compatible with the wetted materials found in Thermal Dynamics pumps, hoses, and torch bodies, including brass, copper, and various polymers. By inhibiting electrolytic corrosion and preventing biological growth, this coolant ensures the longevity of the entire cooling circuit. It is supplied in a 1-gallon jug, ready for immediate use without dilution.
