OVERVIEW

Precision Engineering for Industrial Material Removal

The Walter 01V025 Carbide Burr SM-42 DC represents the pinnacle of rotary file technology, designed specifically for industrial environments where precision and efficiency are paramount. Crafted from the finest grade of tungsten carbide, this tool is engineered to withstand the high thermal and mechanical stresses associated with heavy-duty grinding and deburring operations. The manufacturing process employed by Walter ensures impeccable concentricity, a critical factor that minimizes runout and vibration. This balance not only extends the life of the burr itself but also protects the bearings of your pneumatic or electric die grinder, ensuring a smoother operation and reduced operator fatigue over long shifts.

The defining feature of this SM-42 burr is its "alternate diamond pattern," commonly referred to in the industry as a Double Cut. Unlike single-cut fluting, which produces long, stringy chips and can be difficult to control, the double-cut geometry breaks material down into small, manageable granular chips. This design significantly enhances operator control, allowing for aggressive material removal rates without sacrificing surface finish quality. It is particularly effective on ferrous metals, including mild steel and stainless steel, where maintaining a consistent cut without loading is essential.

Applications for the SM-42 shape are diverse, ranging from enlarging holes and slots to intricate fine finishing work in confined spaces. The conical profile allows access to angled geometries that cylindrical burrs cannot reach. Whether used for preparing weld seams, deburring machined parts, or contouring molds, the Walter Carbide Burr delivers consistent performance. Its exceptional longevity means fewer tool changes and lower overall consumable costs, making it a smart investment for fabrication shops focused on productivity and quality assurance.

FAQ

The Double Cut, or alternate diamond pattern, features cross-cut flutes that break chips into smaller pieces. This reduces tool loading, provides better operator control, and leaves a smoother finish compared to single-cut burrs.

This burr is optimized for ferrous metals, including carbon steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. It effectively removes material while maintaining a long tool life.

This carbide burr is designed for use with pneumatic or electric die grinders. Ensure your tool has a collet that matches the shank size of the burr.

Concentricity ensures the burr spins perfectly true. This eliminates vibration (chatter), which prevents premature wear on the burr and the grinder, and results in a smoother surface finish.

While it can cut aluminum, Double Cut burrs may clog (load up) with soft, gummy materials. For aluminum, a Single Cut or specialized Aluminum Cut burr is generally recommended to prevent clogging.

The SM-42 is a cone shape (pointed cone). It is excellent for getting into tight angles, deburring holes, and working on V-grooves or other confined geometries.

Always wear eye protection (safety glasses and a face shield), hearing protection, and gloves. Carbide burrs spin at high speeds and throw hot, sharp metal chips.

Use consistent pressure (let the tool do the work), maintain the recommended RPM for the burr diameter, and ensure the burr is inserted fully into the collet to prevent shank bending.
