OVERVIEW

Precision Engineering for Industrial Material Removal

The Walter 01V051 Carbide Burr SL-2 DC represents the pinnacle of rotary file technology, designed specifically for industrial environments where precision and efficiency are non-negotiable. Manufactured from the highest quality micro-grain tungsten carbide, this tool is engineered to withstand the extreme thermal and mechanical stresses associated with heavy-duty grinding operations. Unlike standard high-speed steel alternatives, Walter's carbide composition maintains its hardness at elevated temperatures, ensuring the cutting edges remain sharp even during prolonged, aggressive material removal tasks.

The defining feature of this model is its "Double Cut" geometry, often referred to as a diamond pattern. This advanced flute design incorporates right and left-hand helical flutes that intersect to produce small, granular chips rather than long, dangerous stringers. This chip-breaking action not only improves operator safety but also significantly reduces tool loading, allowing for a faster rate of cut and a superior surface finish. The SL-2 shape—a taper with a radius end—is particularly advantageous for mold and die work, allowing the operator to grind contours, smooth out fillet welds, and access tight angles that cylindrical burrs cannot reach.

Walter Surface Technologies has placed a heavy emphasis on the concentricity and balance of this burr. In high-speed die grinding applications, even microscopic imbalances can lead to severe vibration, known as chatter. Chatter not only degrades the surface finish of the workpiece but also accelerates wear on the pneumatic or electric grinder's bearings and causes operator fatigue (HAVS). The 01V051 is precision-ground to ensure perfect rotational balance, delivering a smooth, controlled grinding experience that maximizes both productivity and tool longevity. It is the ideal choice for MRO professionals requiring reliable performance on stainless steel, high-tensile steel, and other ferrous alloys.

FAQ

The SL-2 shape is a Taper with a Radius End (often called a cone with a ball nose). It is ideal for grinding in tight corners, contouring rounded surfaces, and accessing confined areas that cylindrical burrs cannot reach.

Double Cut refers to the flute pattern on the burr. It features two sets of flutes cutting across each other (diamond pattern), which breaks chips into small granules. This results in smoother operation, less vibration, and a finer finish compared to single cut burrs.

It is not recommended. Double cut burrs tend to clog (load up) quickly when used on soft, non-ferrous metals like aluminum. For aluminum, an 'Aluminum Cut' or 'Single Cut' with wide flutes is preferred.

The Walter 01V051 is designed primarily for ferrous metals, including mild steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and hardened steel alloys.

High concentricity ensures the burr spins perfectly true. This prevents 'chatter' (vibration), which extends the life of the burr, protects the die grinder's bearings, and reduces operator fatigue.

This burr is designed for use with pneumatic or electric die grinders. Ensure your grinder's collet matches the shank size of the burr and is capable of the appropriate RPM.

Generally, carbide burrs can be used dry. However, using a suitable lubricant or wax can sometimes help prevent loading and extend tool life, especially on stickier materials, though it is not strictly necessary for steel.

Do not apply excessive pressure; let the tool do the work. excessive pressure causes heat buildup and can chip the flutes. Also, ensure the burr is inserted fully into the collet to prevent shank bending.
