OVERVIEW

Technical Overview: Walter Allsteel™ Carbide Burr SG-1 DC

The Walter 01W344 is a high-performance tungsten carbide burr designed for heavy-duty industrial applications. Part of the Allsteel™ series, this tool is engineered specifically for the rapid removal of material on steel and stainless steel workpieces. The burr features an SG-1 (Pointed Tree) geometry, making it particularly effective for contouring, milling in acute angles, and preparing surfaces in confined spaces. The defining characteristic of this specific SKU is its extended 6-inch shaft, which provides the necessary reach for internal pipe work, deep casting finishing, and maintenance in obstructed areas.

Technically, the burr utilizes a Double Cut (DC) flute pattern. This cross-cut design serves two critical functions: it reduces the size of the chips produced (granular chips rather than long, sharp slivers) and it balances the cutting forces to reduce tool chatter. The result is a smoother finish and significantly improved operator control compared to single-cut alternatives. Manufactured in the USA using precision CNC grinding, Walter burrs maintain strict concentricity tolerances. This ensures that the tool runs true in high-speed die grinders, minimizing vibration that can damage spindle bearings or cause operator fatigue during prolonged use.

The carbide substrate is selected for its hardness and heat resistance, allowing the burr to maintain its cutting edge even under the high thermal loads generated when grinding tough ferrous alloys. The shank is securely brazed to the carbide head, ensuring structural integrity at the high RPMs required for optimal carbide performance.

FAQ

Double Cut burrs feature cross-cut flutes that produce smaller chips for easier disposal and provide better operator control by reducing tool chatter and pulling.

It is not recommended. The Allsteel design is optimized for ferrous metals. On soft non-ferrous metals like aluminum, the flutes may clog (load up). Use a dedicated non-ferrous (Alu) burr instead.

For a standard 1/4" to 1/2" head diameter carbide burr, speeds typically range between 15,000 and 25,000 RPM. However, with an extended 6" shank, it is crucial to reduce speed or ensure the burr is in contact with the work before spinning up to prevent shank bending due to runout.

SG-1 refers to a Pointed Tree shape. It is versatile for both surface grinding using the side of the burr and reaching into tight corners or grooves with the pointed tip.

The 6-inch specification typically refers to the length of the steel shank. The total length of the tool includes the carbide head.

Concentricity ensures the tool spins perfectly true. On an extended 6-inch tool, even minor wobble (runout) is amplified, which can cause dangerous vibration, poor finish, or tool failure.

While it fits physically, standard drills usually spin too slowly (under 2,000 RPM) to be effective. Carbide burrs require high-speed die grinders to cut properly and avoid chipping.

Always wear impact-resistant eye protection (safety glasses and face shield), hearing protection, and gloves. Long sleeves are recommended to protect against hot, sharp metal chips.
